The new global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by UN member States in September 2015. The International community has already started implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are at the core of the 2030 Agenda. This year’s G7 Summit will be a prime opportunity for world leaders to show their commitment to implementation of the SDGs. It is crucial that G7 members play a leading role in implementation, with the SDGs applying to all countries as a comprehensive and universal set of goals. In light of this, it is also very important that Japan, as the current holder of the G7 presidency and host of the 2016 summit, takes the initiative in addressing this important political agenda.
This symposium will discuss how G7 members can play a leading role in the effective implementation of the SDGs, with an emphasis on Japan as the holder of the G7 presidency. SDSN Japan is developing policy recommendations for G7 members to contribute to high-level policy discussions as part of the G7 Summit process this year.
A panel discussion will further elaborate the background to these policy recommendations, and also explore future actions and commitments by a range of different stakeholders for implementing the SDGs.
